I spent a Sunday morning rock climbing at an orientation session for sports climbing with MCSA Johannesburg at Kings Kloof in Krugersdorp, 45 minutes away from central Johannesburg. To get to the crags for climbing you have to pass through a residential area about 1,5 km before the Achterburg gate. The crags lie beyond a short bridge and sanctuary. There are quite a few climbing areas in the valley. For detailed information check out: http://www.climbing.co.za/wiki/King%27s_Kloof
Entry to the reserve costs R30. There are a few rules that you have to observe.
This place is really a gem – so near Johannesburg you can get to a beautiful valley surrounded by rock faces, a river and bush.
I even saw cattle grazing nearby.
For beginners there are some good crags to climb. In the area we were climbing there were grade 15 to 21 routes.
I was there from 9am to 2 pm with a friend before deciding to head back home. The other climbers from MCSA Johannesburg were a great bunch to be with – They provided lots of good advice and were very friendly. MCSA Johannesburg hold monthly orientation sessions for climbing. If you’re new to the sport these sessions are great as the club has gear available for you to use (rope, shoes, harness, belay device and helmet)
