I spent 10 nights at the Fairway Guest House in Durban for my December break. It’s located in Durban North (the Broadway offramp on the M4), just after Blue Lagoon and Riverside.
Having grown up in Durban and returning multiple times each year, it’s the first time I’ve stayed in this area; and it certainly won’t be the last. The property overlooks a golf course (Beachwood Country Club) and the ocean.
Beachwood beach is a short walk away, and a nice beach. I watched many 4×4’s being towed out (drivers have direct access, but their vehicles can’t handle it). There’s also local fishermen, swimmers and sea kayakers who launch from this beach.
The guest house has 5 sea facing and 2 garden facing suites. With balconies, large gardens, a pool and great deck to chill at. Breakfast each morning from the hosts are superb. The rooms are extra spacious and clean.
It’s a perfect getaway to relax at, where you have the sea breeze without the crowds, and good security (there are patrols and a guard station on the road opposite the property). Beachwood Country Club is situated next to Virginia airport, so you may see light aircraft taking off or landing, with high frequency mostly around the weekend in the morning and late afternoon.
If you have no vehicle that’s no problem as it’s a short walk across the M4 bridge to Checkers, Ocean Basket, Woolworths and other shops (about 600m away from the Guest House).
With a vehicle, you have easy access to Umhlanga and Durban (North Beach, Umgeni, Morningside are less than 10 minutes away).
