The Harties Cableway is located in the small resort town Hartbeespoort which lies along the slopes of Magaliesburg. It is only 45 minutes away from central Johannesburg and half an hour away from Pretoria.
Their was originally an old cableway at this site from 1973 but this closed down in 2005. In 2010 the entire cableway system was revamped before re-opening to the public.
At the bottom cableway station is a sit-down restaurant. At the top you can pre-order picnic baskets or buy pizzas and drinks from an express restaurant. When I visited with friends we chose the latter option. The pizzas were really good.
From the top you can see the Hartbeespoort Dam and surrounding areas in this little town plus most of the town Brits. On a clear day you will be able to see the Coca Cola Dome in Johannesburg and parts of Pretoria.
It can get a little windy so carry a light jacket to cover yourself if you intend to spend the day up there.
For a return trip tickets cost:
- Adults: R160 at the ticket office, R140 if booked online.
- Kids (4-14): R90 at the ticket office, R80 if booked online
- Under fours ride for free and pensioners pay R100 only.
If you go early in the day you may choose to purchase a single ticket and hike down.
The cableway is open 7 days a week. Check the Harties Cableway website for the opening and closing times.
It is located just off the R511 on Plot 3, Melodie Agricultural Holdings, Hartbeespoort.
GPS Co-ordinates: S 25°43’11.6″ EO 27°53’04.8″. I managed to find the place easily on Google Maps. For an easy-going, great time out with friends and family check out Harties Cableway.
We had a spectacular time up there.
